Orthodontic emergencies: what to do if…
Most small problems can wait until the next working day.
A wire is poking my cheek
- Cover the end of the wire with a small ball of orthodontic wax.
- Or gently push it back with a pencil eraser.
- Call the practice so we can shorten it.
A bracket has come loose
- If it is still holding on the wire, leave it and put wax on it if it bothers you.
- If it has fallen off, keep it in a box and bring it to your next appointment (a lost bracket is charged at €25).
I lost or broke my aligner
- Put your previous aligner back in (always keep the old one!).
- If the next one is ready and fits well, you can put it in.
- Let the practice know quickly (a lost aligner is charged at €80).
I missed an appointment with a palatal expander
Stop the key turns until your next appointment, and call the practice.
My palatal expander hurts very badly
Call the practice.
I'm in pain
- Sensitivity for a few days is normal.
- Eat soft foods, have cool drinks.
- A Doliprane can bring relief, follow the leaflet.
- If the pain lasts more than a week, call us.
An appliance or palatal expander moves
Don't pull on it. Call the practice for a prompt appointment.
Real emergency
A blow to the teeth, a broken tooth, facial swelling or fever: call the practice. In the evening, at the weekend and on public holidays, dial the French on-call medical number 15 to reach the on-call dentist.
